This tradition stemmed from long ago when the infant mortality rates were very high -where making it through the first month of life was a tremendous achievement. This milestone would then be celebrated. In the past, you wouldn't even name your child or have anyone come visit the child until this one month celebration as it was only then that you were "in the clear."
Needless to say, times have changed and modern advances prove that the scary first month wasn't so scary after all. However, as with many other traditions, this one stuck and is celebrated in the majority of Vietnamese households.
This meant only one thing. Olivia, being the only grandchild in the Nguyen family thus far, had to have a celebration of her lifetime. All her great aunts and uncles came, cousins (first, second, third and probably fourth), grandparents and every person who will love her through her life came to meet her, hold her and wish her a lifetime if happiness and health. She also made out like a bandit with all her gifts! This was the beginning of her college fund!
Ong and Ba Ngoai were exceptionally happy and proud that day. What a great first month of life indeed! We love you Olivia!
